The Showcase Spectacular returns to Leeds with two whole days of locally made wares, entertainment, food and drink.
Former owners of the now closed JuJu Shop in Leeds Corn Exchange, Ian Meek-Myers and John Slemensek, were eager to start a new chapter, forming the Showcase Spectacular in 2013. Using the same principles of their former shop, this unique event gives local independent traders a much needed platform to sell their wares in the comfort of one of the city’s most iconic historical landmarks.
Last year, the free event went off with a bang, seeing around 12,000 to 15,000 visitors come through the Leeds Corn Exchange doors for its début year. On Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd November 2014, the venue will come alive once again, showcasing a host of indie creativity in all its forms, from cinema and music to arts and crafts.
From 10am on Saturday and 10.30am on Sunday, you’ll be able to browse 80 stalls featuring an eclectic mix of hand crafted jewellery, photography, sculpture, art and gifts. With leather satchels from Baresilver, animal themed notebooks from The Owlery and quirky jewellery from Onetenzeroseven, you’re bound to find the perfect Christmas present for that special someone at Showcase Spectacular.
Of course, if you’re looking for some entertainment, there’s plenty in store. Hosting a unique Compass Live Arts Festival event, you’ll get the wonderful opportunity to meet Selina Thompson as she presents ‘Pat It and Prick It and Mark It With a B’. But this won’t be a passive performance, you can take part too, helping Selina construct a dress made out of cake – sounds tasty.
There’s even more fun ahead at Showcase Spectacular with exhibitions and galleries from the likes of Basement Arts Project and Assembly House, pop-up cinema from Chronovision, performances from Leeds City College students as well as tropical disco from DJ Dorotop.
With such a jam packed weekend, you’re bound to get hungry. The good news is you’ll be well catered for. Grab a slice or two from Sela Bar’s pop-up pizza restaurant or some decadent fudge from Fudgerrific. Whether your poison is craft beer, mulled wine or something softer, you’ll find plenty of refreshments to wash it down with too.
No matter if you’re looking for that perfect Christmas gift, fancy a few treats for yourself or are looking for a great way to spend a weekend in Leeds this November, be sure to check out some of the best talent Yorkshire has to offer at Showcase Spectacular.
Showcase Spectacular is at Leeds Corn Exchange from Saturday 22nd to Sunday 23rd November 2014. Free entry.
