In a dark studio that looks more like a club than a gym, TRIB3 are offering a boutique bootcamp experience unlike anything else in Leeds – and it’s totally addictive.
Let’s get one thing straight right from the get-go – TRIB3 ain’t a gym. It’s a studio, you workout there, but you can’t go in and do your own thing. They have their own unique spin on fitness, a combination of treadmill, resistance and intensity training, and no one else is doing it – at least not outside London. It’s damned hard work, but you’re not in it alone, it’s called TRIB3 for a reason, they’re building a community here and you can be a part of it.
You’ve never seen a studio like this before
You’ll see the difference as soon as you walk in. The reception area feels more like a cool bar than a gym, it’s all industrial-chic, with exposed brickwork, copper piping and raw wooden panelling. You can order a smoothie on the way in and it’ll be ready for you when you finish your workout, no dilly-dallying, just top-class service. From here, you’ll head off to the changing rooms, which are stripped back but surprisingly luxurious – just wait until you see their big drench showers. They even have one set up so you can have an ice cold hosing after your workout if you’re brave enough.
The lockers work on a ‘set-it-yourself’ combination, no fussy locks, and you can get a huge fluffy towel for £1 a go. But that’s not all. They’ve made sure you have everything you need – there’s shampoo, conditioner and shower gel, as well as hairdryers, straighteners and curling tongs. Hell, they even have shoe polish, ironing boards and hair bobbles (because there’s nothing worse than getting to the gym and realising you can’t put your hair back).
And then you’re ready to start. The studio is a completely different environment. It’s dark and atmospheric. The lights are turned down low and the temperature is too, which is exactly what you want when you’re going to push your body to the max. In here, you don’t care what other people think, they’ve created a space where you can get in the zone and focus on yourself – it’s the perfect escape, 45 minutes of ‘me time’ while you workout.
Of course, it’s not pitch black, in fact, the lighting is a big part of the experience. It’s a bit like a club. They use the lights and the music to rev you up and push you on. You start on a cool blue, then the music starts to build up and the lights start flashing. It’s time to work up a sweat. You’ve got a personal trainer in there with you, telling you what to do, and as the lights start to move to purple, then red, you’ll feel your pulse begin to race. It’s almost like they’re taking you on a ride, manipulating your senses to push you to the limit.

The workout itself is a mix of interval training on the treadmill, resistance training on the floor and high-intensity floor and functional training – and yeah, we’re not going to lie to you, it’s damned hard work. You’ll be doing sprint intervals, broad jumps, toe touches, chest presses, incline work and god knows what else, all in one session. You will be knackered at the end, but you’ll also be a part of the TRIB3.
“We’re not going to dance around it, this is a really tough workout – but that’s why people do it. As soon as you complete your first workout, we’ll put your picture on the wall – it’s instant gratification. Come 50 times and you’ll become a TRIB3 Warrior, come 100 times and you’ll become a TRIB3 Immortal. Each one unlocks its own clothing range, which you can wear with pride,” Leigh Sanders, Programme Director and Head Trainer at TRIB3, told us.
It’s a structured session led by an elite instructor – but don’t be deceived, just because you’re part of the group, doesn’t mean you’re all treated the same. They take the time to get to know you, your injuries and your fitness goals, so they can help you get what you want out of the class, whether that’s the absolute maximum calorie burn or just to get back on the horse. You don’t have to be a fitness fanatic to do a TRIB3 workout, you just have to want to do your own personal best.
And that’s where the Myzone belt comes in. It’s like a high-tech version of a FitBit, except it tells you a hell of a lot more. Everyone gets one at TRIB3 and the results go up on the big screen. It actually scores your workout, so you’ll know what you’re working towards and how close to it you are – and so will your instructor. Now that’s going to be a big motivator.

The great thing about TRIB3 is that you can burn up to 1,000 calories in one go. It’s not a hard and fast number, it’s different for everyone – it depends on how hard you work. “It’s not just the session itself. In the 45-minute workout, most women burn off between 500 and 600 calories, while men burn off 800+, but it also increases your metabolic rate, so you’ll continue to burn calories long after you’ve left the studio, taking it up to 1,000 or more,” Leigh explained.
TRIB3 run 56 classes a week, with two classes over lunch and a couple every weekend too. They start at 6:30am every day and the last one’s at 7:30pm, so you could squeeze one in before or after work. You can even cancel your session at the last minute and rebook without being charged because plans change and they get that.
And it’s not just the session timetable that’s flexible. You don’t have become a member, like at the gym, although you can if you prefer to budget a monthly amount.
