There are loads of gyms in Leeds – but which should you choose? We’ve rounded up the best of them to help you decide.
Leeds is home to an array of gyms and each one is different. You can do a traditional workout on the treadmills and exercise bikes, try something a little more structured with a fitness class or go wild with a high-intensity workout in a club-like studio. Which one you pick is all up to you, but we’ve got 13 of the best to help you make your choice…
Motive8 is a Leeds fitness centre with a difference. It’s home to a small, intimate gym, where you’ll find all the usual equipment, but that’s not why people come here. You see, they’ll help you put together a personalised fitness programme. They offer a personal training facility, so you can get their 1-to-1 sessions, or if you’ve got a target in mind, you can join their Do It In 12 programme, which will help you reach your goals in just 12 weeks. Gym membership is £25 a month or £40 if you add their classes, while the Do It In 12 programme will set you back £1049 for three months of unlimited gym access, two personal training sessions a week and oodles of support.

Virgin Active Health and Spa
Virgin Active is one of the most reliable gyms in Leeds and you’ll soon see why. From treadmills to weights, you’ll find all the usual equipment on the gym floor, as well as the latest cutting-edge fitness equipment, like Woodway Curves, TRX and Wattbikes. It also offers a range of classes designed to make getting fit fun, like BodyCombat, which is a mix of karate, taekwondo, boxing and kung. Membership starts from £45 a month and that will give you access to their indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts and spa facilities.

Want to get fit as a firefighter? There’s only one place to go – Firehouse Fitness. It’s a one-of-a-kind gym that’s been created by ex-firefighters to help you reach peak fitness. If you just want a normal workout, they have everything from treadmills to leg press equipment, but if you want to push yourself harder and shake up your workout, there’s no better place to be. The gym is kitted out with a massive functional training section where you’ll find tractor tyres, sandbags and sledgehammers. Downstairs in The Drill Room, you can take unique classes, like Drill, which will see you working out with hoses, casualty dummies and breathing apparatus. Membership is £34.99 a month for 12 months or £32.49 contract free and it gives you unlimited gym access and classes.

Snap Fitness is open 24/7, so you can access their exceptional facilities every day of the week. Their two Leeds venues have a mix of cardio and weight equipment, as well as a functional training area with TRX, which is designed for navy-style suspension training. Whatever your routine, you’re guaranteed to stay on track with your Myzone belt – it uses heart rate technology to tell you how hard you need to train to reach your goals. Prefer to work out in a group? They offer a range of classes, including spin, HIIT and vinyasa flow yoga. Membership is £39.99 per month and gives you access to all Snap Fitness gyms with unlimited classes at each.

It may be at the University of Leeds, but you don’t have to be a student to go to The Edge. In fact, it’s one of the best gyms in Leeds, with everything you need to hit your fitness goals. There’s a 250-station Technogym fitness suite, an advanced resistance and weights zone and over 220 exercise classes each week led by their fully qualified coaches. If you want to try something a little bit different, why not take on their climbing wall? Alternatively, you can book in at one of their five squash courts or get a team together for the outdoor 5-a-side pitch. Premium membership is £51.14 a month for unlimited access to the pool and fitness suite, but if you can workout off-peak, you can get a cheaper membership.

CrossFit is an exercise phenomenon that improves your strength, fitness and body composition, all in one go. Their tutored high-intensity classes are incredibly effective but you can also make the most of their open gym sessions if you want to workout at your own pace. When you join, you’ll take on their fundamentals course to introduce you to the different techniques and equipment they use, then you’re free to make the most of their state of the art fitness centre in Leeds. Membership is £89 a month and will give you unlimited access to their classes and open gym sessions, with no contract or joining fees.

TRIB3 isn’t technically a gym at all, it’s a boutique bootcamp where you’ll push yourself to the absolute limit. Step into their dark, club-like studio for a hardcore workout that combines treadmill, resistance and intensity training. Led by their expert instructors, you’ll do everything from sprint intervals to broad jumps and toe touches – even better you’ll be able to see how hard you’re working, because they use MyZone belts, so you can track your progress on the big screen. They run over 50 classes a week, starting at 6:30 am and running through to 7:30pm, with two classes over lunch – and you can order a smoothie before your sessions, to pick up on your way out. Membership starts at £100 for 10 sessions or you can do an individual session for £15 a pop.

Want to try something a little bit different? Join L1 Performance. You can try one of their of pay-as-you-go classes, which range from Ryde to Barre, or make the most of their personal training sessions. They also have a state of the art gym, a 27-metre astroturf running track, a spinning room, squat racks and training pods – all of which are included in your membership. Got a sports injury? They offer physiotherapy services on-site. Membership is £55 a month which includes access to the gym and 10 credits each month to use on classes.

W Fitness is Leeds’ first fitness space solely for women and it’s not like your conventional gym. It’s a fun and friendly place to work out and once you join, everyone will get a bespoke 30-minute circuit training plan, complete with resistance training that will help you to tone and cardio exercises to burn off calories. But that’s not all – your progress is checked by their expert team of female trainers once a month so you can tweak your work out to ensure you’re getting the most out of it. You even get full access to their gym facilities, home exercises and a nutritional plan to boot. Membership costs £35 per month.

If you’re bored of your usual workout, check out Primal. You can get creative with your fitness regime at this Leeds gym – and by that, we mean you can swing on the monkey bars, do a few rounds in the boxing ring or test your strength on the sled pull. But that’s not all. They’ve also got a slam wall, squat-racks and climbing ropes. Don’t forget to visit the sauna after your workout – or make the most of their sports massage and physiotherapy facilities. When you join, you’ll work with a member of the team to set realistic fitness goals that are assessed each month. Membership prices start from £60 per month.

Want an easy, convenient workout that fits around your schedule and won’t break the bank? Try The Gym in The Core. They’re open 24/7, so you can use their facilities whenever you want. They have over 170 pieces of equipment, all top of the line. From the spinner bike and elliptical trainer to the lat pull, rotary torso and arm curl machines, they’ve got the lot. There’s also a low-impact workout area to warm up and an exercise room. Membership is just £13.99 a month.

Graft Häus is a state-of-the-art warehouse gym from a group of trainers who’ve worked at the biggest commercial gyms in Leeds. They’ve filled their 8,000 square foot unit with Primal Strength equipment, which you can’t find anywhere else in Leeds, so you can have a go on everything from stair masters to the curved treadmill, as well as work out functional area, studio and astroturf. They go the extra mile to make your experience even better – think on-site sports therapists, an infra-red sauna, GHDs in the locker rooms and a chill out zone with barista coffee. Standard membership starts from £35 per month for 12 months with full gym access or you can pay just £8 for a single day.

If you could go to any gym in Leeds, you’d probably choose David Lloyd, but it is rather pricey. The gym itself is full of top quality equipment, from treadmills to PowerPlates, adaptive motion trainers and cable machines. It’s not just the gym that you get here though. There are innovative fitness activities like virtual group cycling and hot yoga, while you also get access to quality sports facilities from the heated outdoor pool to tennis, squash and badminton courts. There’s the Celsius Spa if you need to work through aches and pains, and it’s great if you’ve got the little ones too, thanks to DL Kids. Membership is £130 a month for full access to everything and gives you 10% off the créche, which is £5 a session. Cheaper packages are available but they limit the times when you can visit.
