Even if you’re self-conscious about your smile, the idea of braces can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be, because King Lane Dental Care offer an alternative to braces that’s almost invisible.
Ever heard of Invisalign? Most people haven’t, but if you’re self-conscious about your teeth, it could be just what you need. Like braces, it gradually moves your teeth, but instead of brackets and wires, it uses clear, custom-made aligners that are comfortable, convenient and practically invisible.
“The great advantage of Invisalign is that they replace what was available traditionally, which was the typical metal brackets and wires.” Dr Peter Fellerman BDS DGDP(UK) told us – he’s the Clinical Director at King Lane Dental Care and a Platinum Invisalign Certified Provider. “Of course, you can have fixed braces that don’t have metal brackets, but you still have to have a metal wire, which makes it very difficult to clean – and you can’t remove it, you just have to live with it. They’re also a bit uncomfortable when the wires are changed, which is typically every month”
With Invisalign, it’s a very different story. They’re not fixed, so you can take them out to eat, as well as when you brush your teeth, which is better for your teeth and gums. It’s the way they look that really wins people over though, because hard as it is to believe, they really are almost invisible.
It’s all down to their unique design – and this is where it gets interesting. The aligners are clear and completely encase your teeth, so you don’t have to have them adjusted, you simply swap your old aligners for new ones every two weeks. That may sound high maintenance, but you only have to go into the practice every 8-10 weeks, because your entire treatment is planned from the offset.
Invisalign uses a clever 3D software programme that creates visuals of your teeth right through the treatment, so you can see how they’ll look at every stage. To do this, you’ll have a scan or they’ll take impressions of your teeth to create your custom treatment plan, then Dr Fellerman personally tweaks and adjusts the plan to make sure it’s perfect. Once you’ve approved them, they’re sent to the manufacturer and an aligner is made for each stage of the process. You won’t have to wait long though, because you can usually start your treatment within two weeks.
Like braces, Invisalign will gradually move your teeth, but it’s a lot more comfortable than traditional braces, as Dr Fellerman explained. “When the first aligners are fitted, you can feel quite a lot of pressure, but it’s very rare that a patient has to take paracetamol. It’s certainly more comfortable than a fixed brace. In fact, patients are often surprised by how comfortable they are. They also find that they get so used to wearing them that they feel weird with them not being in.”
You’ll be given four sets of aligners at each visit, so you simply switch one for another every two weeks, with regular check ups to make sure everything is going to plan. The whole process takes between 9 and 18 months – which means you could have a perfect smile in no time.
