Walled gardens, grand ballrooms and even a vineyard or two. If you’re looking for amazing castle weddings, there’s no better place than Yorkshire.

Everyone wants their wedding day to be magical and memorable, and how better to make sure it’s remembered forever than with a castle wedding? From Whitby to Harrogate, Yorkshire has a whole heap of incredible castles just waiting to host to your special day. Whether you want an island castle or a gothic masterpiece, there’s something to suit everyone…

Ripley Castle

Ripley Castle

One of the best reasons for a castle wedding is the incredible history held in the walls, and Yorkshire’s Ripley Castle has over 700 years of stories to tell. James I and Oliver Cromwell have both stayed here, while in the 1500s owner Sir William Ingilby served Henry VIII, Mary Tudor and Elizabeth I.

Depending on the package, you can start your big day with a gorgeous pre-wedding photoshoot in the castle’s historic gardens, before heading across for your intimate ceremony in the ancient East Wing or the wood-lined elegance of the Library. Once the knot’s been successfully tied, it’s time to enjoy the historic reception rooms, so settle in for a packed evening of food, drink and dancing until the early hours.

One of the best-preserved castles in England, Bolton Castle is surrounded on all sides by the rolling green beauty of the Yorkshire Dales. From the moment you enter under the yawning arch and portcullis, you’ll see acres of historic gardens, along with a stunning vineyard and maze – if you’re after a wedding venue that will knock your guests’ socks off, you’ve come to just the right place.

Your first decision is how many people you want to impress in this little slice of paradise, as the castle can accommodate up to 120 guests during the day, plus another 120 in the evening. Choose a simple but graceful ceremony in the Great Chamber, or go full fairytale with white doves, vows exchanged in the airy Solar Room and even the castle’s trained barn owl flying the bride and groom’s wedding rings down the aisle.

Bolton Castle, Castle End, Leyburn, North Yorkshire, DL8 4ET. Packages start from £3,500 for the ceremony and reception.

Skipton Castle

Skipton Castle

Though the medieval moat and drawbridge may be gone, the rest of Skipton Castle is a perfectly-kept medieval palace, just waiting to make your big day special. Vintage, rustic or luxurious, Skipton Castle caters for any wedding style with ease – with a price tailored to your exact needs. No wonder it’s one of Yorkshire’s most well-known locations for castle weddings.

Choose between the ancient Banqueting Hall or the spacious Granary for the ceremony itself, both hold up to 80 guests. Once you’re done, take the time to explore the grounds, with plenty of beauty spots for wedding photographs. The castle doesn’t have room for a full sit-down wedding breakfast, but you and your guests can enjoy a grand Champagne and Canapé reception on the front lawn before heading off to the next stop to dance the night away.

If you’re thinking about where to get married in Yorkshire and have your heart set on an incredible castle wedding, you have to check out Hazlewood Castle. Between Leeds and York, this privately owned paradise is set in 77 acres of gorgeous woodland and landscaped gardens.

With the option to have the whole castle for your own ‘exclusive use’, you can tailor the entire day to your heart’s content, including the ceremony location itself. If the Victoria Room’s stone fireplace and Grade I-listed metallic wallpaper isn’t to your tastes, you could hold your reception in the State Drawing Room, complete with enormous crystal chandelier, spend the evening under the Old Dining Room’s 18th century Adam-style ceiling, or even dance the night away in the Great Hall, overlooking Towton Moor with over 50 suits of armour encircling the room.

Hazlewood Castle, Paradise Lane, Hazlewood, Selby, North Yorkshire, LS24 9NJ. There are eight tiers of packages, starting from £50 per person.

Danby Castle

Danby Castle is one of the most stunning wedding venues in Yorkshire. Slap bang in the middle of the North York Moors, the castle was built way back in the early 1300s, but it’s most famous for being the 16th century home of Katherine Parr – Henry VIII’s sixth and final wife. Today the venue’s history only adds to the grandeur of your big day.

You’ll tie the knot in their cosy 14th century Court Room, with ancient exposed brickwork on all sides and chandeliers overhead. Once you’re finished, take your drinks reception to the great outdoors, where you’ll have stunning views across the Esk Valley below as far as the eye can see. Once you’re feeling peckish, your wedding breakfast and evening celebrations can be held in the converted stone barn, with towering crossbeams and long, elegant wooden tables.

Danby Castle, Castle Lane, Whitby, North Yorkshire, YO21 2NP. Menus start from around £90 per head, with drinks packages included.

Allerton Castle

Allerton Castle

First owned by William Mauleverer in 1066, the Grade I-listed Allerton Castle is the very definition of gothic elegance. Steeped in history, the castle’s Lord was Prince Frederick, said to be the inspiration for the nursery rhyme, ‘The Grand Old Duke of York’ and the Grade II-listed Temple of Victory in the gardens marks the hill that he climbed.

If you’re still not convinced that this is the place for your fairytale Yorkshire castle wedding, one glance at the Grand Hall’s breathtaking sweeping staircase and 70-foot hammer beam ceiling will be enough to tempt you in. Add the luxurious Drawing Room for signing the wedding register, a drinks reception in the Memorial Gardens and photographs by the Reflection Pool for a match made in wedding heaven.

Allerton Castle, Allerton Mauleverer, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG5 0SE. Friday, Saturday and Sunday weddings start from £48 per day guest, midweek from £45.
