Moving to a new country while starting a postgraduate degree is a significant life change, but for Deepika, Leeds Trinity supported her every step of the way.

Before enrolling on the MSc Data Science and Artificial Intelligence course, Deepika was concerned about settling into life in the UK and keeping up academically. But from day one, she found the university welcoming and easy to navigate, with staff on hand to help her adjust.

“I was surprised that lecturers and professors here are really friendly. I feel like they genuinely want to help me,” she said.

Her week is a mix of lectures, lab sessions and group work, alongside a part-time job and volunteering. With regular student events and a friendly campus atmosphere, it’s been easy to meet new people and feel part of the community.

As for the course itself, working with real data sets and building machine learning models gives Deepika hands-on experience to prepare her for her future career. “It doesn’t even feel like studying – it feels like working somewhere professional,” she explained.

She also praised the student support drop-in, a service where senior students provide help and guidance. “I was asking them all kinds of stupid questions but they were really, really patient with me and they helped me through it.”

The combination of practical learning and ongoing support has helped her grow in confidence – and feel ready for what comes next.

After completing her undergraduate degree, Lucy wasn’t sure what to expect from postgraduate study – but staying on at Leeds Trinity made the transition feel far more manageable.

Already familiar with the university and its staff, she felt confident continuing her Journalism studies at LTU – something she says made a real difference when starting the new course.

“I don’t think anywhere else would feel right now I’ve studied here,” she told us. “Both my undergrad and now my postgrad have had their fair share of challenges that could have easily stopped me in my tracks, and I wholeheartedly believe I would not have coped and managed to get through as far as I have without the support I have been given by this university.

No two weeks look the same. Alongside timetabled sessions and independent study, the course offers a mix of hands-on experiences – from working in TV studios and radio rooms to editing in the Mac suite. There are also opportunities beyond the classroom, including media events, guest lectures and trips to newsrooms, courts and council sessions.

The variety is one of the biggest benefits of the postgraduate course. Having the opportunity to explore a wide range of roles before committing to a career path makes it easier to find what suits you.

“You’ll never be left wondering ‘what if’ – because you’ve tried everything,” Lucy explained.

Studying at LTU and living in Leeds has helped Lucy become more independent, resilient and confident, both academically and personally, giving her a strong foundation for whatever comes next.
