Fans of the green stuff are in luck, as there’s plenty of brilliant places to get the brew in Leeds.
Whether you have it iced or hot, unflavoured or mixed with superbly sweet additions, matcha really is the drink of the moment. We all know the big chains, but we’ve rounded up a ceremonial grade list of the city’s lesser-known spots to grab a cup of this tremendous tea – and however you order yours, it’s sure to taste as good as it looks on your Instagram.

Kapow

Self-proclaimed ‘coffee nerds’, Kapow serves up exceptional matcha from their Thornton’s Arcade location. Their obsession with perfecting brews means they’ve worked hard to refine every step of the process, from training their staff on the production of raw matcha products and preparation, to only opening the packs when they need to use them so they stay as fresh as possible.
They work very closely with their matcha suppliers, Chaology, using a type of matcha called ‘Mokuren’. It’s a stone-ground first harvest tencha (the green tea used to make matcha), ensuring the very highest quality. You can enjoy it as a hot or iced latte or, for something a bit different, served cold with tonic or distilled water. For those wanting a great low-caffeine alternative to matcha, Kapow also serves hojicha, a roasted green tea.

Today, you can find them in Kirkgate Market, where their dedicated Japanese matcha dessert tea house always does things by the book.
They source their matcha from Kyoto, the most famous and historical tea region, so you know it’s going to be good. Their passion is clear, with the highest grade of Japanese green tea served in their drinks and sweet treats. The menu is an imaginative smorgasbord of matcha creations, from their iconic matcha mille crepe cake, to ice cream and delectable drinks like the tiramisu matcha latte, which comes with a ladyfinger for dipping. This is a true celebration of the mighty matcha.

Don’t let this unassuming Japanese-style cafe in Kirkgate Market fool you – they pack a big punch of flavour. They source their tea powder from Kyoto and serve it in a range of imaginative ways. You can have the usual iced or hot matcha latte, or you can kick things up with a power matcha (served with added espresso) or opt for the lower-caffeine hojicha if you prefer.
Their matcha also extends to their dreamy dessert menu, which features the likes of a light-as-cloud matcha crepe cake and traditional matcha red bean cake roll.
