Dough Boys

Dough Boys are in a brilliant location. Nip into Belgrave Music Hall and it’s pretty much the first thing you see, ideally placed for a pre, post or mid-session slice. They’ve built up a reputation as one of the best pizza spots in Leeds. Why? They serve up a range of innovative flavours alongside tried-and-trusted classics.

You can order by the slice or pie, with modern classics such as Salami of Darkness and its combo of Salsiccia picante, salami Napoli and house-pickled chillies, or the vegan genius of What’s the Quack? Feel free to garnish your slice with something from the condiment station – garlic oil, parmesan and Hot Bstrd sauce all come recommended. We’ve lost many a night to a few pints of Five Points and repeat visits to the Dough Boy counter.

Best for: Quick, flavour-packed slices in one of Leeds’ liveliest bars.
Where? Dough Boys, Belgrave Music Hall, 1-1A Cross Belgrave Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2 8JP.

Rudy’s Pizza

A man holding a pizza at Rudy's Pizza

Rudy’s Pizza is the place to go if you’re in the mood for a fault-free Neapolitan. This is where you’ll get that perfect thin crust with beautifully bubbled edges, ideal for chewing on or dunking into a dip – we recommend the chilli honey as it has just the right level of heat. And it’s not just in Leeds city centre – it’s in Headingley and Chapel Allerton too!

Wherever you’re at, top choices from the tempting menu include the Calabrese, with ‘nduja sausage adding a spicy kick. Margherita comes in both traditional and buffalo mozzarella options, while vegans can go for the Marinara or try one of the rotating vegan specials. It’s also dog-friendly, so you can give your pooch some under-table pizza!

Best for: Purists chasing perfectly executed Neapolitan pizza.
Where? Rudy’s, 2 New Station Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 5DL & Unit 6-8, Arndale Centre, Otley Road, Headingley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS6 2UJ & 10-12 Steinbeck Lane, Chapel Allerton, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS7 3QY.

Pizza Punks

Want a pizza you can make entirely your own? Course you do! Head to Pizza Punks for a slice of pie inspired by the punk movement itself. Oh yes, that means they’re giving you the freedom to fulfil all your cheesy, doughy dreams, just the way you like it. Peppers, olives, caramelised red onion, candied jalapeños? Chuck ‘em all on, it’s unlimited!

And it’s not just the veggies either – pepperoni, Tuscan sausage and Punk specials like Irn Bru ham hock and mac ‘n’ cheese can all be included in your creation. Vegan? There’s more than a little something for you too, like vegan pepperoni and Beyond meatballs. Come one, come all, for the DIY pizza creations of your dreams.

Best for: Custom-built pizzas with maximum toppings and zero rules.
Where? Pizza Punks, 37 Bond Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 5BQ.

Franco Manca

An overhead view of three pizzas from Franco Manca with two salads on top a wooden table adorned with paper menus

The key to what makes Franco Manca one of the best places to eat pizza in Leeds is two-fold – their simplicity and their dough. The latter is made on site every day, a slow-rising sourdough that makes even the most basic pizza here a delight. They used to offer just nine pizzas, but we’re not complaining about the expanding menu, especially with pungent Colston Bassett Stilton lifting number 12, Cinque Formaggi.

Pizza No. 10 is another personal favourite, topped with wild mushrooms, smoked burrata and mozzarella, with a truffle pesto base. There are vegan and gluten-free options on the menu, while you can plunge your crust into a trio of dips – ours is the ‘nduja!

Best for: Simple, sourdough-led pizzas done exceptionally well.
Where? Franco Manca, 1 Trinity Street, Trinity Leeds, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 6AP.

Culto

A pizza in front of an oven at Culto

There are no reservations needed to dine at Culto, which is a good job as otherwise you’d be waiting ages to book a table – the pizza is that good. We’ve tried it ourselves on more than one occasion, slowly working our way through a menu that sounds simple but overdelivers on flavour, courtesy of an award-winning chef.

Set your spice levels to 11 with their Diavola Piccante, featuring ‘nduja, salami and fresh chillies. The Funghi Tartufo mixes the earthy notes of mushroom with black truffle. For something completely different, go for the Nordica – a white pizza base topped with marinated king prawns, smoked salmon and sliced lemons.

Best for: Adventurous toppings and seriously flavour-forward slices.
Where? Culto, 97 Stainbeck Road, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS7 2PR.

Ecco Pizzeria

Ecco Pizzeria has been a reliable home for authentic Neapolitan pizza in Headingley for what feels like forever – and the quality is still as high as ever. They had their pizza oven built and shipped over from Refrattari Reggello in Tuscany, ensuring that you get only the best wood-fired deliciousness for your supper.

The menu is a beauty, covering all the classics but also taking detours around the world for some more experimental flavour. Yes, you can grab a margherita or quattro formaggi, but why not travel to Athens for spinach, feta, black olives, cherry tomatoes and oregano, or Bombay for a masterpiece of tandoori chicken, roasted red peppers, red onion and fresh chillies?

Best for: Classic Neapolitan with globally inspired twists.
Where? Ecco Pizzeria, 93 Otley Road, Headingley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS6 3PS.

This Horsforth favourite serves some of the most spectacular Italian food in Leeds, with show-stopping pizzas that range from 12″ all the way up to 20″. They manage to cover all of the bases with a classics section, a dedicated vegetarian offering, five different calzones and a set of specials that runs to over 20 different pizzas. You’re spoiled for choice.

But what makes locals rate it so highly? Take the Calzone Salmone, a fresh-take on the folded pizza – the salmon is mixed with cherry tomatoes, chives, dill, spinach and lemon juice for a Mediterranean taste sensation. They’re great for families too, with the Tropicana pizza particularly popular with kids.

Best for: Big portions, big menus and family-friendly Italian dining.
Where? Trattoria Il Forno, 85 Town Street, Horsforth, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS18 5BP.

Grumpy’s

Some of the best pizza places in Leeds are out in the suburbs, and Grumpy’s has made a real name for itself out at Farsley’s Sunny Bank Mills. Run by a pair of sisters, Alex and Cassie Rogerson, this family affair boasts a wood-fired oven where perfectly crafted pizzas get a big blast of heat until the crust blisters into mouthwatering perfection.

Warm up with dough balls or the baked feta before getting your mitts on the Clive with its mix of harissa chicken, red onion, pickled mango and mozzarella. The vegetarian Bianca is a true original, with mozzarella, gorgonzola blue cheese, pear, walnuts and hot honey. We love the relaxed atmosphere and the sense of calm in a bustling, buzzing area.

Best for: Worth-the-trip suburban pizza with creative toppings.
Where? Grumpy’s, 2 Old Combing, Paradise Street, Farsley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS28 5UJ.

Pizza Loco

You might have seen the brilliant Pizza Loco locomotive at food events across Leeds, but you can get a taste of the wood-fired pies they serve up at their Meanwood base too. All aboard for Neapolitan creations with perfect bases and superbly sourced toppings including the essential San Marzano tomatoes.

In the mood for pun-heavy pizza? Their iconic Jean Paul Goatier is crowned with goat’s cheese, balsamic cherry tomatoes, rosemary and burnt lemon hot honey. The spicy special is the ‘Nduja, while the Friarielli offers up marinated turnip tops with smoked scamorza, roquito peppers and whipped lemon nutmeg ricotta. The only difficulty is which one to choose, but heck, the indecision is even more reason to return for more.

Best for: Top-quality Neapolitan pizza to soak up premium ales.
Where? Pizza Loco, The Meanwood Tavern, 607 Meanwood Road, Meanwood, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS6 4HQ.

What better balm for the ears than the soothing combination of the words ‘Bar’ and ‘Pizzeria’ – enter Sela! Pairing pizza with a beer or cocktail is what we’re here on earth for, and this Leeds legend won’t fob you off with any old slice. Venture down to their wonderful basement and you’re in for a hand-pulled, stone-baked treat – even more so on Wednesdays when you get a whole pizza and house pint for a bargain price.

There’s a handful of veggie options, as well as spicy staples such as the Chorizo or The Hot One, with roquito and jalapeño peppers topped with Sriracha. Want to try something new? The Shralloumi brings together an expert blend of roasted garlic mushrooms with halloumi and house sauce.

Best for: Pizza, pints and good-value midweek sessions.
Where? Sela Bar, 20 New Briggate, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 6NU.

Wood Fire Dine

Wood Fire Dine is the work of Mark Baber, who carried away the coveted crown of Pizza Chef of the Year in 2019 at the Pizza, Pasta and Italian Food Association (PAPA) Industry Awards and was finalist again in 2021. The recognition is a testament to his innovation, starting out with classic Neapolitan-style dough before branching out by adding both a gluten-free dough and then a New York-style base.

Try the Vedura, covered with their own tomato sauce and fior di latte, dressed with roasted peppers, mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes. But there’s always a touch of creativity at the heart of what Baber and Wood Fire Dine do – every month brings a different guest pizza to keep us heading back for the promise of something new.

Best for: Pizza lovers who appreciate technique and innovation.
Where? Wood Fire Dine Artisan Pizzeria, 34-36 Commercial Street, Rothwell, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS26 0AW.

Tapped

A pizza topped with marinara sauce at Tapped Leeds

The joy of Tapped is that you get the best of both worlds – craft beer and pizza that more than holds its own against many a sit-down restaurant. If you plan on making your way through the fruits of the bar’s many copper beer tanks, you’ll need something to line your stomach and the pizzas here are more than up to the task.

They add a bit of beer to the dough and make their own pomodoro sauce, the perfect base for the Ruby Murray, which combines two of the country’s adopted favourites – pizza and spicy beef keema. Want to go meat-free? The vegetarian mashes up mozzarella with mixed peppers, mushroom, red onions and jalapeños. You can even make it vegan by requesting plant-based mozzarella.

Best for: Craft beer fans who want a seriously good pizza pairing.
Where? Tapped, Trinity Leeds, 51 Boar Lane, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 5EL.

Pizza Freak

Lovers of the classic NYC pizza slice rejoice! Pizza Freak is packing ‘em in. You can grab slices to eat in or take away from their skateboard-covered Kirkstall Road home. They make everything in-house, with their tasty bases the product of using long-proved, malted dough, the finest Italian flour and hand-picked toppings – win win!

Will you try their rectangular crusty delights or the Detroit-style deep pies first? Or how about both? In the interests of balance, we often go for both. Yonkers comes smothered in rich tomato sauce and topped with creamy mozzarella, Salsiccia sausage and crispy pancetta, while the Duchess of Bay Ridge is a white pizza loaded with ham hock that’s cooked in Leeds’ own Kirkstall Brewery Virtuous IPA.

Best for: NYC and Detroit-style pizza fans craving something different.
Where? Pizza Freak, 372 Kirkstall Road, Burley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS4 2HQ.

Water Lane Boathouse

When Water Lane Boathouse was getting ready to open, they did everything possible to make sure they got their pizza exactly right. Research trips led to their Small Victories oven being made by Stefano Ferrara in Naples before being shipped over to Leeds. The effort clearly paid off – trust us, they make some of the best pizza in Leeds!

Grab a drink and gaze out onto the water as you scoff an authentic Marinara that tastes like some marvellous discovery from a Neapolitan backstreet. The Zola & Speck is one of our favourites – a white base with gorgonzola cheese, speck porcini cream, cherry tomato and rocket, while the Hot Vegana with a squash base, vegan ‘nduja, garlic spinach and fresh chilli is a fiery plant-based dream.

Best for: Scenic waterside buzz with authentic Neapolitan pizza.
Where? Water Lane Boathouse, Canal Wharf, Water Lane, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS11 5PS.

Pizza Pilgrims

When Pizza Pilgrims landed in Leeds, pizza fanatics cheered – and for good reason. The founders spent six weeks in the south of Italy learning everything there is to know about pies, from some of the most famous pizzaioli in the world. Their signature raised crust is what sets them apart from other pizzerias, and they don’t shy away from unusual flavour combinations.

Take the Carbonara, for example – al dente spaghetti is loaded onto a Pecorino Romano base, complete with crispy bacon, egg yolk and mozzarella. Sounds weird, but trust us, it works. Look out for the giant pink flamingo pedalo soft serve machine for dessert and try to grab a table in the back corner for the best people watching.

Best for: Date nights with standout crusts and creative toppings.
Where? Pizza Pilgrims, 16 Boar Lane, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 6EN.

Homeboy Pizza Co

Homeboy Pizza Co was born out of a love of baking during the first lockdown – owner Harry started making pies for his neighbours, which over time have become regarded as some of the best pizzas in Leeds. You’ll now find Homeboy slinging their sourdough and Detroit-style pizzas in Burley and Roundhay, the latter with a fluffy focaccia serving as the base for all the delicious toppings on offer.

A firm favourite for Leeds foodies is the Scottie Pipperoni, where pepperoni, honey drizzle and marinara sauce come together to create mouth-watering goodness. Make sure you leave some crusts for dipping, because their sauce game is top tier.

Best for: Sourdough and Detroit-style pizza with a cult following.
Where? Homeboy Pizza Co, 309 Burley Road, Burley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS4 2HY & 147 Street Lane, Roundhay, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS8 1AA.

It’s all about the premium ingredients here, with the humble Margarita reimagined as the Royal Margy, complete with anchovies and a whole burrata to deliver big flavour.

Elsewhere, the menu will set mouths to drool with toppings like wild mushrooms, homemade pistachio pesto, smoked scamorza cheese and shavings of fresh Italian truffle falling like heavenly clouds onto a perfectly piquant pizza.
