There’s a new homeware store in town helping you revamp your crockery collection for a fraction of the cost!

If you’re homeware obsessed like we are, you’ll be buzzing to know that there’s a new ceramic shop in town, stocking gorgeous, unique pieces that’ll bring your cabinets to life.
Pay-what-you-weigh homeware warehouse, Mondego, have set up their second ever store right here in Leeds. We caught up with founder Cedric Quillet to learn more about their fantastic offering.

Cedric told us that Mondego was originally a home decor and furniture store on the outskirts of Chester, that he set up with his business partner Alina. After a year of low footfall, they decided to hone in on one product so they could “do it properly”.

The pair immediately fell in love with the idea of selling Portuguese ceramics: “We flew to Portugal, met with some of the best factories and started importing directly. That’s how Mondego found its true identity, built around Portuguese craftsmanship and quality,” Cedric said.

Today, they work with Cedric’s cousin in Portugal who has over 20 years of experience in ceramics. “He knows all the directors from big and small factories which means we have access to the best and most interesting designs. That close relationship helps us find new pieces, develop our own collections, and make sure everything is made with care.”

That lack of a middleman and a commitment to fair pricing is what sets Mondego apart from competitors, making them the first and only shop in the country to sell Portuguese stoneware by weight. Cedric believes “it’s a more mindful way to shop, you choose what you love, piece by piece”.

Be careful though, everything in there looks so good, you might leave with more than what you bargained for. On our first trip, we got two pasta dishes and a plant pot, but we were tempted to grab so much more.

Look out for their striped collection – a vibrant range of mugs, jugs and dishes available in different colours. Though it’s separate from their pay-by-weight offering, it remains one of the most popular collections that they sell, due to the “simple and timeless” design that adds character to any kitchen or dining table.

Cedric and Alina are thrilled to have brought this and all their other collections to Leeds, choosing the city because Alina lives here. “We felt it was the perfect place to branch out,” said Cedric. “It’s a bigger, more dynamic city than Chester, so it’s a great opportunity to reach more people who appreciate quality and design.” With its lively creative community, Leeds is just the place.

“Our ethos is simple, to offer the best quality products at the lowest possible price. We believe everyone should have access to beautiful, well-made ceramics, so everyone pays the same price, whether it’s a restaurant buying in bulk or a student wanting just one plate.”
