Chapel Allerton has firmly established itself as one of Leeds’ top foodie neighbourhoods, and Hern has played a big part in that. Its refined menus are shaped by the best locally sourced seasonal produce, with a strong focus on minimising waste. Inside, dark wood tables, crisp white walls and shelves lined with organic wines create an understated yet elegant setting.
With an ever-changing menu, no two visits are quite the same – one of the many reasons we keep going back. On one visit, we tucked into herb-fed chicken with chickpeas, goat horn pepper and ruby chard, while another saw us devouring cavatelli with homemade lamb ragù. There are dedicated vegetarian and pescatarian menus too, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

Horsforth’s neighbourhood French bistro has quickly become one of the city’s most talked-about restaurants, racking up award after award. Led by Sandy Jarvis and Clément Cousin, Bavette serves refined French cooking in a warm, welcoming setting. Rich dark green walls, gold mirrors and soft lighting create an elegant backdrop that’s every bit as polished as the food.
The menu is small but perfectly formed, changing with the seasons. Starting with a few snacks is always a good idea, and you can’t go wrong with a crisp, warm baguette served with house butter. On our visit, we tucked into a caramelised onion tartlet with Otley pecorino, followed by a beautifully flaky braised lamb pithivier with purple broccoli and salsa verde, before rounding things off with a Yorkshire rhubarb crème brûlée.

Zucco has earned its reputation as one of Leeds’ best Italian restaurants. The menu is packed with tempting small plates, pasta and daily specials, making every visit feel like a difficult choice for all the right reasons. That’s no bad thing, though – it simply gives you another excuse to come back. With fresh, seasonal specials changing regularly, there’s always something new to discover.
Start with one of the pizzette – mini pizzas topped with combinations such as spinach, gorgonzola and walnut or olives, capers and anchovy. Seafood dishes are equally tempting, while homemade pasta favourites might include venison ragù with tagliatelle or braised beef pappardelle. Round things off with the parmesan-breaded chicken cotoletta and you’ll soon see why Zucco has such a loyal following.

Inspired by the traditional eateries of Tokyo and Osaka, TADA brings authentic Japanese cooking to a stylish, intimate setting in the heart of Headingley. Upstairs, soft neon lighting and minimalist décor create a calm dining space, while downstairs the sushi counter is the perfect spot to enjoy glass of sake while you watch the chefs at work.
Kick things off with cauliflower karaage, served with a spicy mayonnaise that’s hard to resist, before exploring the restaurant’s impressive sushi selection. Highlights on our visit included the chicken teriyaki rolls, soft-shell crab rolls and tofu kimchi roll, while the TADA tofu poke bowl, packed with tofu, kimchi, edamame and avocado, is a solid choice if you’re after something more substantial. Bento boxes and ramen complete a menu that’s packed with reasons to return.

Forde

Acclaimed chef Matt Healy has refocused on great produce treated simply at Forde, a move that has seen the restaurant grow from its original Horsforth home to a second site in Ilkley. Open from Wednesday to Saturday for its seasonal menu and on Sundays for its popular roast offering, Forde combines refined cooking with a relaxed, neighbourhood atmosphere.
Drop by during the week for thoughtfully crafted small plates designed for sharing. The menu changes with the seasons, but on our visit we enjoyed dishes such as pork fillet with Pedro Ximénez and baby onions, alongside roasted half chicken with pickled red onion, avocado and aioli. It’s a restaurant with a real buzz, where confident cooking and carefully considered flavour combinations keep people coming back.

The Box Tree

Ilkley’s famed fine dining institution remains one of Yorkshire’s most celebrated restaurants. Led by Brayden Davies, The Box Tree pairs beautifully executed cooking with warm, attentive service in an elegant sandstone cottage. Head sommelier Didier Da Costa is on hand to guide guests through the extensive wine list, making every visit feel like a special occasion.
A three-course lunch at £65 is somewhat of a steal for cooking this good. Start with BBQ damper bread and take your pick from graceburn feta and Vegemite butter, before going onto chicken liver parfait with parmesan custard. Main course comes in the form of Westholme wagyu served with winter chanterelle, swede and a Bordelaise sauce. The full-on tasting menu comes with canapés, bread, amuse-bouche, pre-dessert and an optional cheese board. It’s a rare treat.

Family-run, wood-fired and homemade are exactly the words you want to hear before visiting an Italian restaurant, and Trattoria Il Forno in Horsforth delivers on all three. Head chef and owner Vitalij Korosteilov has spent more than 20 years perfecting his craft, turning this neighbourhood trattoria into a firm local favourite. Expect wood-fired pizzas, homemade pasta, hearty calzone and a regularly changing selection of specials.
Kick things off with king prawns cooked in garlic, chilli and lemon before moving on to one of the restaurant’s generously topped wood-fired pizzas or a creamy mascarpone linguine with smoked salmon. Even the salads deserve your attention, with the insalata di rucola fichi caprino e pinoli combining goat’s cheese, figs, rocket, pine nuts and balsamic chutney.

Darvish

Serving the people of Roundhay and Harehills, Darvish is Persian to its core – they’ve even bought the colourful cookware and carpets that make the place so welcoming all the way from Iran. Chef Alireza Rafievahid moved to the UK from Tehran in 2007 and has been at Darvish ever since, sprinkling a little magic and saffron all over an authentic menu full of dishes you rarely get to eat in Leeds.
Kick things off with the aubergine dip – grilled aubergine with tomato sauce, eggs, garlic and spices, served with one of the best naans in the city. Then move on to the Chello Mahicheh, a meltingly tender lamb shank in Persian sauce with saffron rice and barberries, or choose from a selection of richly flavoured stews and kebabs.

Exposed brickwork, wooden panelling and vibrant pops of colour create an inviting setting, but it’s the aromas drifting from the open kitchen that really set the scene.

Lupe’s Cantina has been bringing the bold flavours of Mexico to Burley for years. You won’t miss this suburban favourite, thanks to its bright yellow façade and colourful calavera skull outside, while inside you’ll find vibrant interiors, excellent cocktails and a menu packed with authentic Mexican dishes.
Start with crispy beer-battered fish tacos, grilled cactus salad or chicken flautas – rolled tortillas filled with seasoned chicken and black bean hash. Then wash it all down with one of the restaurant’s Mexican beers, many of which are hard to find elsewhere in Leeds.

Culto had us at draught Moretti. Crisp Italian lager and great pizza are a winning combination, and this Meanwood favourite delivers both in abundance. From the team behind street food favourite Poco, Culto pairs a relaxed neighbourhood atmosphere with a menu of handmade pasta, wood-fired pizza, antipasti and carefully selected Italian wines.
The arancini remain a highlight, filled with beef bolognese, mozzarella and peas, while the linguine marechiaro combines tiger prawns, cherry tomatoes, courgette and langoustine sauce for a rich, satisfying pasta dish. The hand-stretched pizzas are equally impressive, made with quality ingredients and available with gluten-free or black pizza bases.

Napoli nel Cuore translates as ‘Naples in the heart’, and that’s exactly what this family-run Horsforth restaurant delivers. Authentic cooking, warm hospitality and a menu packed with southern Italian favourites have earned it a loyal following, while traditional décor adds to the feeling that you’ve stepped into a neighbourhood trattoria in Naples.
Pizza lovers are spoilt for choice, with more than 30 varieties ranging from the classic Napoli, topped with anchovies, capers and olives, to house specials such as a heart-shaped pizza with mozzarella, Parma ham and rocket. Tapas and Tunes may have started life as a fictional ‘samba-tapas’ restaurant in La La Land, but its real-world namesake has become one of Otley’s most exciting dining spots. Living up to its name, it serves Iberian-inspired dishes downstairs, while upstairs you’ll find everything from live bands and open mics to lunchtime concerts and even salsa classes.
The food is just as lively. Start with charcuterie or pintxos, or keep things simple with pan con tomate before moving on to king prawns cooked with chilli, garlic and lemon. The classics are all here too – patatas bravas, calamares fritos and a regularly changing selection of market tapas, which might include lamb braised with shallots or swordfish skewers. Muy bueno!

Sweet Basil Valley

Sweet Basil Valley is full of surprises. From the outside, it’s easy to overlook, but step inside and you’ll find cherry blossom trees, lacquered wood and soft lighting that create an elegant dining room tucked away near a Yeadon roundabout. The menu is just as impressive, bringing together generous portions of Chinese and Thai favourites alongside a handful of less familiar dishes.
You’ll find all the soups, appetisers and Cantonese classics you’d expect, but it’s worth digging a little deeper. The roast duck is a standout, served with your choice of soy, plum or orange Cointreau sauce, while the Szechuan five-spice diced beef shin and twice-cooked pork slices with aromatic pepper and chilli oil are are delight.

Noi’s Thai Kitchen

You might not expect to find one of south Leeds’ best Thai restaurants tucked inside a historic football pub, but that’s exactly what awaits at The Old Peacock on Elland Road. A Leeds landmark since 1826, the pub has become just as well known for Noi’s Thai Kitchen as it has for its matchday atmosphere.
The menu is packed with authentic Thai favourites, from fragrant red, green and yellow curries to standout dishes such as the roasted duck tamarind. There’s plenty for vegetarians and vegans too, making it a great choice whether you’re heading to Elland Road or simply looking for an excellent Thai meal.

While its flagship eatery is in Leeds Corn Exchange, the Oakwood restaurant is the place to settle in and make an occasion of it.
