Sweet Saeeda

You can’t mention halal food in Leeds without mentioning Sweet Saeeda. The Tunisian restaurant is the definition of a hidden gem. Tucked away among the various shops of the 1981 Hall in Kirkgate market, they serve some of the freshest, tastiest and cheapest food in the city – and it’s all 100% halal.

Their sandwiches are yummy, packed with your choice of falafel, lamb, curry chicken and more for around a fiver. Elsewhere, the Tunisian plates give you a taste of the whole menu, but for something a little lighter, the Tunisian salad is your answer. Olives, tomatoes and red onions form the base, with your choice of protein, big dollops of hummus and tahini sauce.

Best for: Salads, sandwiches and light bites.
Opening times: 10:30am to 4:45pm Monday to Saturday. Closed Sunday.
Find it: Sweet Saeeda, Unit 411, Leeds Kirkgate Market, Row F, Hall 1981, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2 7JJ.

Everything that comes out of their kitchen is halal and they even offer a special Iftar menu during Ramadan. The real treat? Their Sunday roast menu which offers a choice of four mains including a roasted prime cut of Wagyu and all the trimmings you’d expect from a traditional roast. Push the boat out and get the Dubai chocolate cake for dessert – you deserve it.

Best for: Iftar with a touch of luxury or a halal Sunday roast.

Let them know your preference when you book or simply ask your server to point you towards their halal recommendations on arrival. You can choose from modern Asian-fusion dim sum such as koi fish gau, lobster and prawn toast and duck spring rolls, opt for small plates like the moreish sugar salt crispy squid or go all out with a main like Chinese BBQ chicken.

The double smashed patties are succulent and cooked perfectly, served in a classic potato bun and always covered in delicious tangy cheese.

You can fill up on their classic Superstar burger which comes with their famous Star sauce, or push the boat out a little with the (turkey) Bacon Cheese or Jalapeño varieties. If you’re feeling really adventurous, opt for the Truffle burger with rich truffle mayo.
