Go big or go home, that’s the motto at the Underground bakery. Though their menu is pared back, it’s constantly changing with a rotating selection of bakes, sandwiches and seasonal pastries and their 1kg fresh bread is large enough to feed the 5,000.

Get there early enough when the bakes are still warm and you can tuck into a beautiful buttery pastry that’ll melt in your mouth. The fruit Danish is one of the best we’ve ever tasted, made with sweet vanilla cream and seasonal fruits. They bake fresh in limited quantities and sell out frequently so don’t delay, deliciousness awaits!

Where: 10-10A Boroughgate, Otley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS21 3AL.
Best for: Huge, fresh loaves of bread packed with flavour.

You’ll find Karpaty Bakery within the hallowed halls of Kirkgate Market. It’s one of the best value bakeries in Leeds, with a great selection of goodies from less than £2. They make everything from intricately decorated gateaux to simple Swiss rolls, bread and yum-yums.

They also have an Armley branch, from which they helped serve the community during the pandemic, providing discounted and free fresh products to older residents who were isolating. That sense of altruism and community service is what keeps people coming back again and again– well that, and the moreish apple cake that tastes like it’s from a fairytale.

Where: Unit J, 1904 Hall, Kirkgate Market, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2 7HJ and 79 Town Street, Armley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS12 3HD.

Their Leeds bakery can be found in Kirkgate Market and is the one-stop shop for long-fermented hand-shaped bread.

They use organic, locally-sourced ingredients in all of their bakes and no two treats are the same. All of their offerings are mouthwateringly good and there’s no guarantee what they might have in on any given day, but if you happen to see them, their cinnamon buns are a must-try.
