Just around the corner from Leeds Station, The Whitehall Restaurant & Bar is an ideal first stop if you’re travelling into the city for a show. Combining seasonal ingredients with attentive service, it’s a reliable choice for a pre-theatre dinner in Leeds.

The early evening menu offers excellent value, with three courses and half a bottle of wine or a drink of your choice for £38. Start with Loch Duart smoked salmon, baked heritage beetroot or French onion soup, before choosing from mains including roast monkfish tail and chicken Caesar salad. For dessert, the sticky toffee pudding with salted toffee sauce and black treacle ice cream is hard to resist.

Harvey Nichols Fourth Floor Brasserie is something of a hidden gem, and its Briggate location puts it just a short walk from Leeds Grand Theatre. If you’re looking to turn your theatre trip into a proper occasion, it’s hard to ignore.

The seasonal set menu showcases local produce with a creative twist, courtesy of Head Chef Lee Heptinstall. Enjoy three courses and a cocktail for £35 – exceptional value considering the quality on offer. Kick things off with dishes like whipped feta with mint and oregano compressed tomatoes, before moving onto mains such as chargrilled flat iron steak and pan-fried sea bream. There’s plenty to tempt you for dessert too, from raspberry and white chocolate mille-feuille to an almighty cheeseboard.

Uyare

If you’re looking to make a real evening of it, Uyare is one of the best pre-theatre restaurants in Leeds. Perched on the rooftop of Victoria Gate, the latest venture from the award-winning Tharavadu team pairs panoramic city views with modern South Indian cooking, making it a memorable spot before the curtain rises.

Uyare’s dedicated pre-theatre menu is built around tapas-style dining, so you can enjoy plenty of flavour without feeling rushed. For £18 per person, you’ll choose two small plates served with rice or paratha. From masala-fried cauliflower to fiery beef pepper fry, there’s something for meat lovers and vegetarians alike. Fancy a drink? Add a paired cocktail for just £5. Better still, the menu is designed to be enjoyed in under an hour, so you’ll have plenty of time to make your show.

Whitelock’s

Just a couple of minutes from Leeds Grand Theatre, Whitelock’s is perfect if you’re after classic pub food before the show. Better still, Leeds Grand Theatre and Opera North ticket holders can enjoy an exclusive pre-theatre menu.

Book ahead and show your ticket to enjoy two courses for £23 or three for £29. Tuck into the likes of black pudding scotch egg or soup of the day to start, followed by beer-battered haddock and chips or the famous Whitelock’s Burger, before finishing with ginger sponge pudding and Northern Bloc ice cream. It’s hearty, comforting food that’ll keep you going right through to the final act.

Kendells Bistro

If date night and theatre night go hand in hand, Kendells Bistro is one of the most romantic pre-theatre restaurants in Leeds. The candlelit French bistro sits just a short stroll from Leeds Grand Theatre and serves a tea-time set menu that’s ideal before an evening performance.

Choose from soups, tarts and seafood starters before moving on to classic French dishes such as slow-braised ham hock with puy lentils and red wine jus or slow-roast duck leg with dauphinoise potatoes and black pudding. Don’t skip dessert either – the crème brûlée is a house favourite.

Situated less than five minutes from Leeds Playhouse, Sarto serves one of the best-value pre-theatre dinners in Leeds. If you’re looking to tuck into fresh, authentic pasta dishes without spending a fortune, it’s a solid choice.

Its dedicated pre-theatre menu includes one snack and one pasta dish for just £18.50. Start with focaccia and olives, spinach and ricotta arancini or Caesar salad before moving on to handmade pasta dishes like pappardelle with white ragu and crispy sage, campanelle with Yorkshire peas and fennel cream, or radiatori with tomato, basil and mozzarella.

Teppanyaki

If you want the entertainment to start before you even reach the theatre, Teppanyaki is the place to go. Just across the road from Leeds Grand Theatre, chefs cook your meal right in front of you with flying utensils, flaming grills and plenty of theatrical flair.

Set menus start from £35.95 for three courses, with options including miso soup followed by teriyaki chicken cooked on the teppan alongside fried rice and vegetables, before a refreshing serving of melon or ice cream to finish. It’s a memorable way to kick off a night out – watch out for the flames!

Kerala Canteen

Situated just around the corner from Leeds Playhouse, Kerala Canteen is home to one of the best-value pre-theatre menus in Leeds. Headed up by Michelin-trained chef Bobby Geetha, it serves authentic South Indian dishes with a modern twist.

The pre-theatre menu includes one curry bowl and a side for just £11.75 – exceptional value for food of this quality. Choose from flavour-packed options including lamb and chickpea or beef and bone marrow curry, then pair it with a side of porotta, butter cheese chappathi or basmati rice.
