Got a hankering for hosomaki? A craving for California rolls? Well, you’re in luck because Leeds is home to some of the best sushi restaurants this side of Japan. Whether you’re after a quick and tasty lunchtime bite to eat or an authentic Omakase experience, get your chopsticks at the ready because these eateries specialise in serving up mouth-watering morsels of sushi.


Issho is a Michelin-recommended Japanese restaurant, so you can bet they do some seriously good sushi. Their menu is full of gourmet versions of the classics from tiger prawn tempura to spicy tuna rolls. Feeling more adventurous? You can sample delectable morsels of BBQ eel nigiri or indulge in a wagyu beef roll with truffle and mushroom. Whatever you choose, each roll is carefully hand-prepared and comes elegantly presented.

If you’re in need of a quick sushi fix to take away, make a beeline for Wasabi. They have a wide and varied selection for you to choose from, including hosomaki, gunkan and futomaki. Each roll is packed full of the finest fresh fish, so you can enjoy melt-in-the-mouth Scottish salmon and sustainably-caught yellow fin tuna. The boxes are all freshly prepared and packaged in-house each morning, making it easy for you to grab good sushi on the go.

Sushi Waka are raw-fish specialists, plying the folk of Leeds with oodles of sushi and sashimi in their spacious, modern restaurant. There’s 18 different types of nigiri for you to snaffle, including octopus, sea bream and clam, alongside hand rolls and hosomaki. But it’s their house special rolls that are the real stars of the show. They bring together unusual flavours like scallop, salmon and spicy mayonnaise as well as sea bass, tobiko and okra – it’s a real taste sensation!

Decked out with lanterns, cherry blossoms and brightly coloured murals, Senbon Sakura is a cool little Japanese eatery where you can tuck into tasty bites of sushi. All of their rolls are jam-packed with deliciously fresh fish, but their Rainbow Roll is particularly special – it comes bursting with salmon, tuna, prawn, squid, avocado, cucumber and Japanese mayo. They have loads of veggie options too, from the fresh and fragrant vegetable futomaki to the sweet tofu and avocado roll.

If you want an authentic Japanese sushi experience, head to Little Tokyo. It’s an intimate spot, with a koi carp pond and oriental wood bridge as well as sunken tables where you can enjoy your sushi the traditional way – cross-legged on the floor. You’ll find classic plates of California rolls and salmon uramaki on the menu – but it’s the nigiri and maki sets you really need to try. It’s an assorted mix of fish nigiri and vegetable maki that’s specially selected by the chef each day.

For quick, easy and delicious sushi in Leeds, Kokoro is the place to go. There’s a huge array for you to choose from made-to-go, with tuna, veggie and California rolls alongside more unusual options like inari pockets – fried tofu stuffed with sushi rice. Salmon lovers won’t be disappointed either, as they’ve got an all-salmon set. Each roll is hand-prepared using fresh ingredients and comes packaged in ready-to-go-boxes, so it’s always an easy yet delicious bite for lunch.

Teppanyaki Sushi

Teppanyaki is famous for its theatrical preparation of hot dishes on their grill-top tables, but did you know they also did delicious sushi? They have all the usual fish options, like salmon, tuna and prawn, but it’s the experimental combinations that set them apart. There’s spicy chicken katsu maki and mango California rolls, the latter of which gives the raw fish an irresistible burst of sweetness. Pair your sushi with a Japanese beer or a glass of sake to complete the experience.

Yo! Sushi

One of the first conveyor belt sushi restaurants in the UK, Yo! Sushi is a must try. They have over 30 different sushi dishes moving along the belt in front of you, so you can take your pick of everything from aromatic duck rolls to their signature Yo! Roll – fresh salmon, avocado and mayo in orange masago. Can’t see what you’re craving? Hit the button on your table to get it made specially. And if you want to give your sushi an extra flavour hit, there’s authentic Yamasa soy sauce on-hand to dip-in.

Itsu is a Japanese fast-food restaurant in Leeds that specialises in serving quick and healthy sushi. Their veggie club rolls are stuffed with carrot, green beans and ginger to give you a vitamin injection while the Omega 3 box is full of protein-loaded salmon rolls, paired with a pumpkin seed salad for an antioxidant boost. Each one has been carefully constructed by hand, so they look as good as they taste too. You can grab one of their boxes to go or take a pew and enjoy it in their bright and spacious eatery.

Hana Matsuri


If you love sushi, a visit to Hana Matsuri in Meanwood is a must. The cafe-style restaurant only has seven seats and you’ll need to reserve one in advance, but while it might be small, it sure is mighty. Their menu of hosomaki, inside-out rolls and middle rolls is ever-changing as they only use the freshest catches from Cornwall and each piece of sushi is prepared right in front of you. Why not push the boat out and go for the Omakase? It’s a Japanese fine dining tradition where the chef curates a unique menu of sushi for you.
