A Senior Bus Pass provides free, off-peak bus travel to anyone who’s eligible for a state pension, making it cheaper and easier to get around.

If you’re eligible for a state pension, it makes sense to claim your free Senior Bus Pass.

Pssst – did you know that anyone eligible for a state pension also qualifies for free bus travel? The Senior Pass offers unlimited off-peak bus travel, allowing seniors to hop on any local bus service from 9:30am on weekdays in West Yorkshire, from 9am on weekdays in York, and all day on weekends and public holidays. With a bus pass in hand, the possibilities are endless. Where to first?

There are plenty of ways to spend a day in Leeds city centre. Seniors can get discounted tickets to shows at the Grand, City Varieties, Howard Assembly Room and Carriageworks Theatre, putting you front and centre at a host of shows for less. Prefer the big screen? Everyman Cinema offers cut-price concession tickets for all films, while their Silver Screen programme features matinee screenings for over 55s, with ticket prices including a free hot drink and a slice of cake. With ultra-comfy seats, it’s the best place to catch the latest release.

If you like a side of history with your cinema, a visit to the suburbs is in order! Both Hyde Park Picture House and Headingley’s Cottage Road Cinema offer discounted tickets for seniors, in venues teeming with character and charm. There’s also a chance to catch live sports for less at Headingley Stadium, with discounted cricket and rugby tickets on offer. Peckish? Plenty of fish and chip shops offer senior discount, but our pick is historic Murgatroyds in Yeadon, who serve up three delicious courses for just £15 with their senior menu.

Head out to pretty Harrogate

Why not use your senior pass to go further afield and head on up to Harrogate? It’s only an hour’s journey on the 36 bus. Kick things off with a bit of history at the Royal Pump Room Museum, with tickets available from as little as £2.80. Or if the weather’s nice, how about a trip to stunning RHS Harlow Carr? It’s a 15-minute ride away from Harrogate on the X6 and Senior Life Membership is available for over 60s. Afterwards, treat yourself to afternoon tea for just £15 at Mama Doreen’s Emporium, where you can sit and watch the world go by.

Hop on the bus to buzzing Bradford

Inspired by the gardens at Harlow Carr? Jump on the 425 from Bradford city centre to check out Tong Garden Centre, where over 60s get 10% off all purchases every Wednesday! And with Bradford 2025 just around the corner, it’s a great time to immerse yourself in the city’s culture. Seniors can get discounted tickets to shows at The Alhambra and St George’s Hall, giving you cut-price access to a jam-packed line-up of theatre, comedy and live music. Elsewhere, the captivating Police Museum offers concession tickets for just £5.

Take a trip to historic York

Fancy a city break? York has plenty of hotel offers for the over 60s! Hop on the 840 and then check into either Delta Hotels York or Moxy York, where you can land a senior discount on your room. There are plenty of things to explore in the historic city, and a Pastport is a great way to discover the best attractions. Available for just £18.75 for seniors, it unlocks four experiences including the JORVIK Museum and the City Walls Experience. Peckish? Tuck into three courses of hearty pub fare for just £13.49 with The Cross Keys’ senior menu.

Terms & Conditions. You can qualify for a Senior Pass if you’ve reached the state pension age and you’re a permanent resident of West Yorkshire. You can apply for a pass 28 days before you reach state pension age. The pass entitles you to unlimited free bus rides on local bus services throughout England during off-peak hours. Off peak-hours begin every weekday from 9:30am onwards in Leeds & West Yorkshire, from 9am in York and all day on weekends or public holidays. The pass also entitles you to half-fare, off-peak train travel within West Yorkshire. Off-peak train travel is available from 9:30am to 4pm, then again after 18:30, between Monday and Friday, and all day on weekends or public holidays.
