With high ceilings, ornate furnishings and a rich history, we could only dream of living in a house this beautiful.

Situated on a bespoke gated development in the heart of leafy Chapel Allerton, Mansion House – formerly known as Gledhow Grove Mansion – was built in the 1830s by industrialist and mill owner John Hives. For a number of years it continued to be a regency property, until the 20th century saw it take on an entirely new purpose.

In 1927, HRH Princess Mary opened Chapel Allerton hospital on the grounds of the mansion, while during WWII, the cellars that still remain in the mansion were made into bomb shelters. Between then and 2017 it was largely derelict, with the grounds in ruin and foxes nesting – but that all changed when the property was beautifully restored with the original features kept during ten years’ worth of renovations.

The Mansion now consists of three houses and three apartments, and we were lucky enough to check out the East Wing. As we made our way through the grand front door, we were immediately struck by the tiled hallway, the ceiling roses and the gorgeous sage green walls. But the best was yet to come.

The kitchen has to be the most striking part of the property. A beautiful herringbone oak lays the foundation for the floor, while floor-to-ceiling sash windows keep the room feeling light and airy. Functionality wise, you’re set with a quartz-topped island at the heart of the kitchen (with two wine coolers built in), a Rangemaster oven and plenty of room for entertaining guests.

Then it was through to the adjacent drawing room. With the walls enveloped in a rich blue (all colours in the house are from local suppliers Farrow and Ball), the centrepiece chandelier immediately commanded our attention. Imported from France, the current owners let us in on the fact that they even had to have the ceiling reinforced to hang it – best of all, they’ll be leaving this breathtaking beauty behind for potential buyers.

The upstairs of the property was calling our name, where there were four excellent double bedrooms left to explore. Our favourite feature of the master bedroom was the curved wall, which led us to a beautifully tiled ensuite bathroom, complete with a bespoke vanity unit and a walk-in shower with a Crittall-style glass door. Cast your eyes over to the windows and you can enjoy unrivalled views of the city skyline.

The other bedrooms were perfectly spacious, one with another ensuite and the other two next-door to the house bathroom. With herringbone tiles, a waterfall style walk-in shower and a standalone, roll-top bath, it’s sure to give you the ultimate bathroom envy – we could definitely spend a relaxing afternoon here.

Lush greenery wraps around the whole of the property. In fact, it has the biggest garden on the estate! The grass is lush and well-kept, with mature trees that keep the property sheltered. There’s also ample space for outdoor seating and kids activities, perfect for keeping the whole family entertained.

All in all, Mansion House has the best of both worlds. It’s unusual to find a property so grand and with so much green space so close to a suburb like Chapel Allerton, with a whole number of trendy restaurants, shops and bars all within a five-minute walk. If you can see yourself living here, why not check it out for yourself?
