Plant Point

Ryan Vintage – it’s in the name. Enter this Duncan Street stalwart and you’ll be met with a whole load of retro goodies and accessories at proper bargainous prices – they’re one of the longest running and best value vintage clothing shops in Leeds.

They’re big on everything sporty, from your Adidas to your Nike, but you might even encounter the odd Gucci scarf or Burberry bag if you rummage around this treasure trove for long enough.

For those who like it hot, a visit to The Chilli Shop is in order. Celebrating all things spicy and fiery, they flog everything from chilli jams and hot sauces to cheeses and chocolates – you can even prank your friends with a pack of the world’s hottest gummy bears.

Colours May Vary is one of the coolest independent book shops in Leeds, although you won’t find any heavy classics in here, oh no. Step inside and be greeted by a cornucopia of carefully-curated fashion and design mags, prints, coffee table books, homeware, stationery and more.

They source their collections both locally and internationally, from a mix of established and up-and-coming-makers, so you know this is stuff you won’t find anywhere else.

Nestled away in the heart of Headingley, Vinyl Whistle is a record store-cum-cafe that’s definitely worth seeking out. The shop spans two floors and four rooms, with genres covering everything from rock to reggae.

Since they set up shop in 2004, Seagulls have established themselves as trailblazers of a niche market. They’re an independent paint shop with a difference – they collect, re-process and re-sell leftover paints so nothing goes to waste.

Their team are happy to whip up any colour chart, and also run regular workshops where they specialise in a range of disciplines, from painting and decorating to mosaic.

The Green Yard

If you’re looking for something that’s a little more exotic, though, why not go for the tropical bird’s nest fern? Make sure to grab a bag of their peat-free potting compost on your way out too.

Nestled away on the first floor of Leeds Corn Exchange, Indie Makers is a store all about supporting the local makers, artists and designers of the UK – if you’re seeking fun and unique handmade gifts, this is the place to be.

Expect funky prints, quirky tote bags, homemade soap bars and bath bombs, and that’s not even scratching the surface. Their products and suppliers change on a regular basis, so no two visits are ever the same.

Caspar’s Bottle Shop

Caspar’s Bottle Shop pride themselves on bringing great booze to the people of Leeds. On offer are beers from the best up-and-coming local breweries like The Meanwood Brewery and Abbeydale Brewery.

They do also however look further afield for international favourites, from Norwegian brewery Amundsen to Denmark’s Mikkeller. They have four keg taps with an ever-changing array of beers to keep things fresh.

f you’re celebrating a special occasion with your nearest and dearest, With Love is the place to go. This Oakwood gift shop has been standing for over 40 years, supplying locals with all their gifting needs.

Located in the vibrant Thornton’s Arcade, Masato Jones is a one-of-a-kind, independent fashion retailer in Leeds. The boutique was founded by a Japanese-born designer of the same name, who earned his stripes studying womenswear at the esteemed Central St Martins university before moving to Leeds and opening his first store.

His signature style is marked by bold, playful prints, intricate tailoring and quality fabrics such as Japanese cotton. Everyone can find unique pieces in there, with made-to-measure services available to ensure whatever you buy fits like a glove. Masato also offers one-to-one tutoring in his first floor atélier, where people can learn garment making and pattern cutting from a pro – hidden gem is an understatement!

If you’re a fan of wine, a visit to Wayward Wines is a must. They specialise in pure organic wines with a hand-picked selection of natural vino from across the globe. Whilst you’re there, why not stick around for a glass or two?

Stick to what you know with Merlot, or push the boat out with the Montepulciano, with sour cherry and tart fruit undertones. If you’re unsure where to start, you can always sample your way to a new favourite.

With humble beginnings as a stall on Leeds Market, Blue Rinse has now established themselves as one of the best independent vintage stores in the city. They currently have two stores in Leeds, both bursting at the seams with handpicked gems.

From varsity jackets to 70’s flares, their wares are impressive, but it’s their Remade in England collection that really takes the biscuit, where vintage picks are given a new lease of life.

They stock every type of comic and graphic novel, from great independent books such as ‘Nao of Brown’ to the latest superhero action adventure comics like ‘Spiderman’.

They stock signed copies, run events and even have multiple Eisner nominations to their name, so you know that they’re the real deal.

The simply stunning Evergreen Gallery is the craft gallery and studio of mother and son duo, Stephen and Anne Roper. They look to the natural world for their inspiration and inside you’ll find a contemporary mix of art, cards and textiles alongside carefully curated ceramics and art glass by leading UK makers.

These guys are experts in all things high-quality wine and spirits, only selling vintages they’ve personally tried and enjoyed, with over 1,300 bottles on the shelves, from medium-bodied Merlots to crisp Sauvignon Blancs.

A cornerstone of the city’s independent music scene for 40 years now, Crash Records is one of the best independent record stores in Leeds. They specialise in indie, alternative and metal artists on both vinyl and CD, with racks lining the walls upstairs and down.
