Want to sit on top of the world in Leeds? This very des-res penthouse has given us serious terrace envy…

An absolutely drop-dead gorgeous penthouse suite has just come on to the market in Leeds – smack in the middle of the city centre. It might be time to check your credit rating, however, as it’s priced at a not-to-be-sniffed at £1.3m. We were lucky enough to get invited for a sneak peek both inside and out.

A Leeds legend made modern

Buildings don’t come much grander or storied than 2 Great George Street. Built in 1889, this Grade II-listed property was home to Leeds Central High School for over a century. Latterly used for council offices, it has just been given a new lease of life as home to Leeds’ most expensive penthouse flat.

The flat itself sits at the summit of a brand new development – one of the few residential developments in LS1 in recent years – chock full of incredible duplex apartments and smart one and two-bed homes, as well as a private gym. But the icing on the cake, as ever, is on the top.

Original features meets bang-up-to-date style

Step inside the original front door of the school, past the tiles still in place from when schoolchildren trod the hallways, and ascend to the top by lift. You’ll be met by floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the interior space with natural light even when the sun is barely showing its face.

This is a great example of how to take a listed building and turn it into a haven for modern living, with rooms that flow into one another seamlessly due to the sense of space and airiness. Floor area is maximised through discreet built-in wardrobes and huge wraparound terraces.

A design for luxury living

Elegance and performance are built in to the penthouse courtesy of a high-spec finish. The en-suite bathroom boasts a freestanding Lusso stone bath and Villeroy & Boch fittings. The kitchen, complete with Miele appliances, links with the dining area for effortless entertaining.

There are three bedrooms in total, the master with not just that en-suite but generous seating and also a glamorous dressing room. They manage to walk that fine line between privacy and a sense of openness that feels thoroughly chic.

A view to a thrill

We haven’t stepped outside yet. Trust us, the views from the huge terraces are sensational. By day, you can see all across the centre of Leeds and even miles beyond. At night, the links twinkle atop the city, making you feel that you’re really a part of things. And that’s not even the best bit.

How do you fancy relaxing in your very own hot tub while enjoying your rooftop views of Leeds? How about sweating out the cares of the day in your private steam room? Maybe take a stroll on the rooftop garden? Yep, it might come with a hefty price tag, but this penthouse delivers real wow factor.

2 Great George Street apartments are available to reserve now.
